“A noise woke her up. Or was it lack of noise? As she came to consciousness, she found that the bus was sitting still and quiet, the motor off. Sometimes they had stopped to pick up passengers or to let someone off, but it was completely dark outside, the driver was gone, and the bus was mostly empty. The missionary family was gone. A few people were asleep and an old woman was looking toward the door. From out in the darkness came another a noise, a shout, closer this time.”
